A View from Above

Located in central Turkey, the historical region of Capadoccia is a vast land filled with tiny villages, fairy chimneys, rose-coloured valleys and rocky terrain. The unique landscape of the area makes it difficult to fully explore by foot, so the most popular and breathtaking way to view the hills and valleys is from above- by hot air balloon.

Most balloons depart before sunrise, when the region is quiet and undisturbed. As you slowly ascend, you become one of many balloons dotting the sky, providing an incredible view for both those in the air and those below. The magic of Capadoccia lies not only in the incredibly unique rock formations, but this experience of watching the sun rise while floating quietly in the open air amongst dozens of colourful balloons.

The calm and quiet in this region of Turkey, as well as the dry heat and rocky terrain, reminded me of my hikes in the Judea desert and Ancient Petra. There's something about the historic landscape and ruins of these regions, coupled with the proposition of a challenging hike that is infinitely more appealing than a day spent in a museum. At first glance, the region doesn't offer much but the hot air balloon ride, but it really is an open air playground. If you're visiting Capadoccia, take the opportunity to venture into areas where there are no other tourists. Often, that's where the best places and views are found.
